Reiniger Silhouette Animation Art

Have you ever heard of Lotte Reiniger? Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) was a German animator who pioneered the art of using silhouettes in animation. She was ahead of her time anyway as a female animator, as she started doing this in 1917.

Watch the following video to see how she created her silhouette pictures and animations, then watch the short film, Papageno, from 1935 to be blown away by all the details in her work. It's amazing and charming.

If you've never heard of her before now...you're welcome. :) I'm glad I got to be the one to introduce her work to you.

I came across your blog by accident. Wow. Thank you. I, too, am now blown away by Lotte Reiniger.
